Tsankawi Indian Ruins
The Tsankawi lived in this area in the 1400's before moving down to the Santa Fe valley where they built some of the first pueblos. While at this site they lived on top of the Pajarito Plateau and farmed grain and corn down in the valley areas. In the pictures above you can see the foot trails that have dug into the soft rock after years of travel. These paths were used to move up and down from the farming area back up to their homes on top. In addition there are many petroglyphs that are pictures carved into the rock faces. Since the Tsankawi did not leave a written language, the real meaning of the petroglyphs are not really known. Some of the decendents of these indians, that live down in Santa Fe, know the meanings of some, but other's meanings are lost forever.
These ruins are now considered sacred to the indians, but they allow visitors as long as you do not remove any articles. There are many pot shards on the top and one of the pictures shows examples.
